The Purpose Of Solar Charge Controllers

Solar charge controllers are vital to the performance of your solar panel and battery system. These controllers keep your solar batteries from overcharging or transferring power back to solar panels when the sun isn’t shining.

Solar charge controllers ensure your batteries are charged at an appropriate rate and to the right level.

Are Solar Charge Controllers Always Necessary?

No! Solar charge controllers are unnecessary if your solar panels are 1 to 5 watts. Generally, a solar charge controller isn’t necessary if your solar panels deliver 2 watts or less per 50 battery amp hours.

Larger panels with increased wattage, however, absolutely need solar charge controllers to prevent damage to the batteries.

Types Of Solar Charge Controllers

These devices come in various shapes, sizes, and price ranges. The most commonly used controllers range from 4 to 60 amps, but some newer models reach 80 amps. Generally, there are three types of charge controllers available:

  • Simple 1- or 2-stage controls are older units that disconnect or short the panel if a specific voltage is reached.
  • 3-stage or Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) has become the industry standard and uses charge settings to protect the battery life, which includes bulk, absorption, and float.
  • Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controls are considered top-of-the-line controls with exceptional efficiencies, but they’re also the most expensive.
